A recent modification of the system was to fill the geothermal loop with antifreeze instead of water. I’d love to know more about why this was done.
I know that there have been quite a few problems with the geothermal system in general – going over limits, shutting down, and (gasp) having one of the heat exchangers in an air handling unit freeze during a night of 14 below weather.
Sure would be great if we could get a dialogue going about the benefits and problems of geothermal. It is not all roses, and our experiences here could help others know more and avoid some of those problems.
We specilaize in geothermal systems and could help with your issues if you are interested. In general, geothermal systems are usually fairly simple to operate compared to other systems, but may be a unfamiliar to someone who has not had much experience with these types of systems.
One of the perhaps main characteristics of a geothermal heating and cooling system is that it typically is slower at raising the temperature than a boiler/chiller system, so night set-back may not work as well.
We have recently been informed (I am passing this on third hand so a grain of salt, please) that our systems compressors may not be the right size — seems like they are always working like the dickens. Who would think geothermal would be noisy – but ours is like having a bunch of very loud machinery blasting away most of the time, which is what it is. Stay tuned as we find out what the designers decide to do.

Any Geothermal experts out there lurking??
